The aim of the thesis entitled “Laboratory of Life. Synergy Between Arts and Biotechnologies” is to figure out whether it is possible to create clothing using the fabric made of living organisms that are able to interact with our body in a symbiotic manner. To begin with, the concept of life, sex and family in the context of the synergy between arts and biotechnologies of the 21st century as well as the evolution of life, feminine identity and family were discussed in the thesis. Moreover, a comparison between the womb of the mother and the Anthropocene Age was carried out and family rituals regarding birth were analysed. Furthermore, the evolution of textile and clothing was investigated. Finally, microorganisms were examined and a question whether the fabrics of clothing could actually function as a second skin, the skin of “The Other” was raised. A “living” layer of fabrics, that is, bacterial cellulose film that was made by kombucha drink in the process of natural fermentation was examined. To illustrate the theory, symbolic family clothing (namely, three items for each member of the family, the child, the mother and the father) was sewn from the biofiber produced in the laboratory.

Baigiamojo darbo „Gyvybės laboratorija. Meno ir biotechnologijų sinergija“ tikslas – išsiaiškinti, ar įmanoma, kad drabužių medžiaga būtų gyvi organizmai, gebantys simbiotiškai sąveikauti su kūnu. Baigiamajame darbe aptarta gyvybės, lyties ir šeimos samprata XXI a. meno ir biotechnologijų sinergijos kontekste bei apžvelgta gyvybės, moters tapatybės ir šeimos evoliucija. Atliktas palyginimas tarp motinos įsčių ir antropoceno laikotarpio, ištirti su gyvybės atsiradimu susiję šeimos ritualai. Toliau apžvelgta tekstilės ir drabužių evoliucija. Buvo ištirti mikroorganizmai ir iškeltas klausimas, ar dėvimos tekstilės medžiagos iš tiesų galėtų veikti kaip antroji oda, „Kito“ oda. Nagrinėtas „gyvas“ audinių sluoksnis – bakterinės celiuliozės plėvelė, kuri užauginama kombučios gėrimo natūralios fermentacijos metu. Pritaikant teoriją praktikoje, iš šio bioaudeklo pasiūti simboliniai šeimos drabužiai – vaiko rūbas, moters suknelė, vyro marškiniai.
